Not another Microsoft Operating System
I read the other day in one of my Magazines that Microsoft are planning on releasing Windows 7 (formerly called Vienna) within three years, but do we really need another Operating System? I don’t know about you but I was quite exited when I heard Microsoft were going to bring out Windows Vista, and when they produced the beta version I downloaded it and took it for a test drive. I did like the new interface and all of its widgets etc and I enjoyed messing around with it, but it was shame that I couldn’t use any of my own software on it. When MS released the final version I decided not to buy it (which is unusual for me) and let everyone else use it and test it, as I had read it was not compatible with any software and as usual it had some security flaws in it and the list seemed to go on and on with one problem or another, so up until this day I have not bought Vista as I am quite happy with Windows XP pro and SP2 installed. I am not trying to slate Microsoft as I feel they have a hard time trying to get it just right as nearly all hackers try at some point to hack the Operating System, but what I am saying is I think they need to get Vista working flawlessly first without bringing out another Operating System.
I read an interesting article the other day that said ‘The operating system era is drawing to a close; the software that’s set to dominate the next decade of computing is the web browser’ and I agree with this. If you look back just a few years ago all you used Internet Explorer for, was to browse the Internet, that was its purpose, and you didn’t have all the other browsers that are around today. Over the years, the browser has evolved from a simple piece of software to a full blown runtime environment. Just look at what you can do now with it:
• Access sophisticated online applications
• Perform tasks like video editing, video decoding
• Use Online paint editing software
• Install your own mini applications on top of the browser core.
• Watch Videos within it
• Listen to the radio
• And the list is growing
I think that in the future we will not have a computer, all we will have is just a monitor, keyboard and mouse and all our applications will be kept on servers or run from a USB drive or such like. So whether we will even need a new Microsoft Operating System in 3 years is debatable. Do you agree with me or not? I would love to hear you comments.

Perhaps you have forgotten that Microsoft is out to make money first, reliable operating system second. With Vista and its compatibility issues, MS is that much closer to controlling exactly what we can use on our computers. Pretty slick trick to force feed an OS on folks that makes them upgrade other software. I am using Vista and have had some minor problems with it. I prefer XP. A centralized computer system for the world with MS at the switch is a scary thought.

I have often thought of using Linux, but never seem to have the time to try it and with working in IT we cover all MS Operating Systems so I need to keep updated.
