How to Expand Your Open With Menu in XP
The Open With Menu in Windows XP can come in really handy at times, but very few computer users actually use this shortcut. However, in some cases you may want to open an image file (for example a .jpg file) in different applications to see how it looks. Or you may have a text file that you want to open in Word or Notepad, you may even want to open a Web page in a text editor such as Notepad, which enables you to work directly with the HTML that defines the appearance of the page.
To do this, Right click on a file and choose Open With, then click on the program you want to use to view the file.
Ah, but what if the program or application that you want to use is not on the list?
You can easily add a program by clicking on Choose Program in the Open With menu, and in the Programs box click on the program or application that you want. Place a tick in the ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’ and click OK.
If you then right click on the file choose Open With you will see that the program has now been added to the list.
If the program or application does not appear in the Program box, then click Browse and locate the program, click Open and it will appear in the Programs box, now all you need to do is click on the program or application that you added, Place a tick in the ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’ and click OK.
The Open With menu is very easy to use but often overlooked.
