Cheaper and more flexible than the iphone

There is a viable option that can match and possibly out perform the iphone from a grouping of open-source software enthusiasts who set out to develop a smartphone based on OpenMoko which is a GNU / Linux based open free software development platform. This phone is called the Neo 1973 and is available now but is a Developer only Version and costs $300 for the phone or $450 for the Developers kit. However it will be available to all in October and will include Wi-Fi, and orientation sensor and more. The beauty of a device like the Neo is that it’s a one-off purchase. Afterwards it can be used on any GSM network - something surely preferable to a compulsory 18 month to 2-year contract. For the hands-on user, the ability to install any supported software adds an additional layer of flexibility that other smartphones simply don’t offer.neo-1973.pngThe Neo 1973 boasts the following hardware specifications
