What Topics Would You Like Me to Write About?

Friday, May 30th, 2008

I originally started this blog to write about topics that I was passionate about, and share this information with like minded people, or anyone else who wanted to know a little bit more about computers or photography.
But writing about what I am interested in all the time might not necessarily mean that you are interested. So what I have decided to do is add a widget which is on the right hand side about half way down (image shown below) to get you more involved in what I write.

What Topics Would You Like Me to Write About?

The idea behind this is to get you to add topics that you would like me to write about, and then I can add more posts that will be of interest to you.

Its very simple to use, if your want to add a topic click on ‘Click Here and Let Me Know..,” if you just want to add your vote to an existing topic, then click on the ‘VOTE’ button.

Kick Some Life In to Your Pocket PC With These Great Apps

Pocket pc apps

Are you like me and get excited or at least look forward to the time when Microsoft bring out a new Operating System? Because lets face it, after a few years using Windows, the user interface, desktop and shell becomes quite dull and boring, as they saying goes ‘a change is as good as a rest’.
It’s the same for the windows mobile operating system. When mobile 5 came out, (sad but true I was very excited to try it), this OS had been developed from the ground up and was very different from the 2003 version. Even with Microsoft’s latest version, windows mobile 6, it isn’t as user friendly or quite frankly, as pretty as the (dare I say it) iPhone software.
I try not to write about the iPhone as every other website does, but let’s face it, Apple got it sooo right with this device.
Since the arrival of the iPhone many manufactures and software companies have been trying to emulate Apples user interface, many have failed but some have done a great job, one such company is called iWindowsmobile.

In this article I want to show you a few applications that will enhance your user experience, make windows look a little prettier, and hopefully get you to use your finger more, rather than your stylus, why? Because using your finger makes it quicker for navigational purposes, easier to open applications, find contacts and even making a phone call.

As I wrote earlier iWindowsmobilewhich uses VITO Technology have brought out not 1, but 4 software applications that not only look great, are user friendly, have simplistic yet superb graphics but also gives you a stylus-free near iPhone experience. I have only wrote a brief description on each product as there is plenty of information from the links I have supplied.
Note:you can download any of the applications and try them for 30 days.
Lets take a look at the applications:

GoodWin, this application is a touch oriented Windows Mobile launcher, and task manager which replaces the shell of the regular Windows Mobile Operating System.
GoodWin allows you to run, close, uninstall and switch between programs. Add programs to favorites for quick access. View battery charge and switch phone profiles. And did I say it looks great to. Click here for more information and to watch the video.

Next on the list is FunContactwhich is a contact manager that brings iPhone experience to your Pocket PC, this application allows quick and easy scrolling, the ability to send email or SMS a contact with one tap, view recent calls, and can even allow you to sort your contacts by your favourite friends.
Here are some more of its features:
• Instant access to favourites & call history
• instant finger scroll with alphabetic ruler
• built-in contacts editing
• brilliant graphics, smooth navigation, animated menus and big onscreen buttons

ZoomBoard is a finger friendly onscreen keyboard that shows a magnified representation of the keys your finger is over, which makes typing much quicker than the SIP (Software Input Panel) keyboard that comes with Windows, and is more accurate, keeping typing mistakes to a minimum.

SMS Chat has been designed to give you total control over text messaging. This great looking, easy to use application means you can easily follow a conversation scrolling through chats with your finger. With animated menus and a very pleasing interface you won’t want to go back to the old windows version.

Are You in a Format Frenzy?

how to format flash memory

The great thing about todays Phones, Smartphones and Pocket PC/Phones it that you can expand their memory with either Compact flash, SD cards, micro SD cards or other various forms of flash memory.

I was reading a magazine article sometime ago and a reader asked if he should format his newly bought flash memory card. The editor wrote that you should always format a new memory card, because this can prevent errors on the card which can lead to file or data loss, and I totally agree.

So which format should you use FAT, (which is also called FAT16 which stands for file allocation table) or FAT32?
If your flash memory card is between 16MB – 512MB and used for general purpose then format it with FAT16.
If you have a flash memory card over 512MB then use FAT32 if it is going to be used for normal use, for example reading and writing a mixture of data, music, and video.
In general and for most typical card formats the above advice will give optimum performance and maximum space.
However saying that some devices don’t seem to like FAT32 format and therefore just use FAT.

If your are unsure then I recommend that you read the manual that comes with your flash memory card.

If you already use a flash memory card and it is constantly displaying errors, or it doesn’t seem to be reading or writing correctly then it is a good idea to format it.

How do you format your flash memory card?

The easiest way is to use a memory card reader, these are inexpensive and can read various flash memory cards here are a few, USB 2.0 Hi-speed 15-IN-1 and also the 53-in-1 memory card reader
If you’re using Windows XP then simply plug the memory card reader in a USB port and Windows will instantly recognize it. Cancel any dialog boxes that appear.

1. Open Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E)
2. Right Click on the Flash Memory Card Drive
3. Select “Format…”
4. Choose the File System (FAT or FAT32) you want from the drop-down box
5. Choose the Allocation Unit Size (4096 byte or 4KB is good) if you are given this option
6. Uncheck the “Quick Format” button
7. You can give your card a name if you so wish
8. Click the “start” button
9. Once formatted you will be presented with a summary of the results at the end
10.Take the memory card out of your card reader and pop it in the Phone or device.

And that’s it, this will help to keep your memory card in tip top condition.
