Canon Powershot G7 arrived..

Following on from my earlier post Canon Powershot G7, I finally got my hands on this 10mp camera, from taking it out of the box I have enjoyed using it.

What first struck me was how very robust it felt, although a little larger and heavier than some other models I have looked at, however that didn’t seem to matter as the camera felt well made.

So far I have took over 500 images with it and it has done a pretty good job with exposure, colour and sharpness, however some of my portrait shots where a bit more fiddly to get the people in the image sharp but that could be me as I have not mastered some of the controls.

In the box you get all the software needed to get your images onto the PC but to be honest I wasn’t that keen on the software and used the one that came with my 20D. You get a quick set up guide booklet and a PDF guide on the CD that is 170 pages long and as I am a information addict I like to know things inside out, so I am still going through this manual page by page.

Battery life I thought wasn’t too bad although some users have said that it didn’t last very long but that depends on how much flash you use.

The cameras program dial was nice to use and changing the different modes and ISO setting was a breeze. Using the 10x zoom lens was also very easy to use and had a slick feel to it.

The built-in flash unit has a specified range of 4.0 m at wide angle and 2.5 m at telephoto (when the ISO is set to auto) - which is fine for social snaps and the occasional bit of fill-in, but is hampered by the relatively small maximum aperture as you move up the zoom range. I found the red-eye reduction to work well at shorter distances but to be less effective if you move further away and zoom in, but I loved the idea that I can use my Canon EZ 430 flash unit on this camera, that was one of the reasons I bought it.

The camera menu settings are quite vast but quite easy to figure out and anything that I wasn’t sure about I turned to the PDF guide.

All in all I would say that this camera is the best Creative digital compact camera I have used, but please note this camera is not really for beginners, however if you are really willing to learn the menus etc then you will not be disappointed. Below are a few pictures I took and they have not been edited with Photoshop.
