Backup or Else..Continued
The other day I tried to access the photos on my pc (over 3,000 pictures stored in this folder) and suddenly the hard drive crashed. Ok I thought reboot and all will be back to normal, not so, cutting a long story short my hard drive had developed a fault and was trashed. Although I do back up all files and folders etc on a regular basis onto DVD, unfortunately the one folder that had not been backed up for nearly 6 months was the one with all my photos of 2007. A lot of the pictures in that folder were of my 5 year old daughter, which I can never replace. Ok so this is my fault and a lesson is learned.
What I am trying to get across to you is, backup all your important data on a regular basis or else if you don’t you could lose it forever.
I wrote the above article way back in May 2007, but I have decided to update it as I have been using a program called Acronis True Image Home to back up all my data, and I highly recommend it.
Although there are free backup programs out there, non of them can match Acronis for its many features and sheer ease of use.
Below are just a few of its features:
- Backup your documents, music, video, photos, and e-mails
- Protect your applications - Use Acronis® True Image to restore all the settings for Microsoft Office, iTunes, Media Player and dozens of other most popular applications!
- Try&Decide - Test new software or browse the web in a protected, safe environment. At the end of the session, you decide whether to keep or discard the changes made to your system.
-
Security and privacy tools - Use Acronis® Drive Cleanser, File Shredder and System Clean-up utilities to protect your privacy by safely destroying sensitive data, cleaning up your system, or securely wiping the entire hard drive.
-
Boot-time Restore - Start, working in seconds while your system is still being restored in the background.
-
Secure Zone - Protect your system by saving an image to a special hidden partition on your hard disk. It is especially useful for notebooks, and tablet PCs.
Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. The latest version of Acronis True Image Home is V11 and can be purchased form Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.

Although it scared the !*@#$(* out of me at first, I started using the Carbonite online service. You’re totally right about backups, but I never take the time to do it (shame on me). Not only loss of data though, but just buying a new computer can be a Chore. Big Brother is everywhere anyway, so I decided an online service was my best bet.

I will definitely be checking that out. Something similar happened to me a few years ago and i lost months worth of work.
I think the trouble is, it doesn’t happen often, so you become complacent and don’t bother to back up.

Catherine,
You can set it to automatically back up to CD, DVD, or even a different pc and then you don’t have to try and remember a time to do it.
