Something similar happened to me a few years ago and i lost months worth of work. I think the trouble is, it doesn't happen often, so you become complacent and don't bother to back up. You're totally right about backups, but I never take the time to do it (shame on me). Not only loss of data though, but just buying a new computer can be a Chore.
