Auto White balance quick tip

Auto White balance is one of those camera options that most people leave well alone, however changing it can improve your outdoor photography. The reason for this is Auto White Balance is there to neutralise colour casts and to make all your shots look like they have been taken in average midday conditions. Unfortunately this means all your photos taken in golden lighting with amber tones will get neutralised to white which will make all your photos look a bit flat.
AWB will also try to neutralise any coloured filters that are placed over the lens, which is no good if you are trying to create some effect. There is a simple solution to this and that is to go into your camera settings and choose AWB and change it to the Sunny preset, basically what this will do is to allow your warm, amber tones to be recorded as just that.

Now as usual what I try to encourage you to do, is to play around, try also the cloudy preset which will make the shot appear even warmer or even try the shade preset (if your camera has this one) which might be a little to much. Most of all play around and then view your pics on your PC monitor to determine which one is the best.
