7 Great Ideas for Photo Opportunities When It’s Grey and Raining Outside

You decide the night before that you are going to get up early in the morning, go out and take some landscape photos, you check the forecast and it looks good.

It’s early morning and your raring to go you look out of the window only to find out that its grey and its raining outside, what do you do go back to bed? Not really, as there are some great photos to be had, all you have to do is change your game plan, and read my 7 great ideas and tips to get you started.
1. Firstly you need to be ready for low light, try taking your pics with a higher ISO than normal, for example ISO 400 or 800 this will also give them a slightly grainier look for more impact.
2. If you have either a 35mm f/2 or a 50mm f/1.4mm lens try using these as their apertures are fast and great for taking pics in low light. Consider buying one for such occasions as they are quite cheap for the quality you get.

3. Get to know your cameras settings inside out, you should able to change the aperture value or the shutter speed without looking at the dials in case you need to change these settings quickly, as light can change dramatically.
4. If it is dark outside head for your local town or city and capture the neon-lit city scenes, with the road and paths reflecting the lights turning them into blazing mirrors of colour.
5. If it is light outside look for opportunities to capture people trying to brave the weather, colourful umbrellas, splashing in the puddles. Try to capture the rain itself, pouring off the rooftops flowing down the streets etc.

6. Go in close, capture raindrops in midair (you will possibly need to use your camera flash) or take a picture of a rain drop bouncing off a flower or a surface.

7. If all else fails look for interesting indoor subjects, cathedrals, churches or any other buildings that look photographic.

Remember it is all about experimenting, that’s the great thing about digital photography you can take as many pictures as you like (depending on the memory card size) and then delete anything that doesn’t look right.
I hope this wets your appetite (pardon the pun)?
Do you have any tips for taking great photos on wet rainy days?
